“The Spirit Lives On”
by Phil Sabado
Embellished Giclee of Watercolor Original
Commissioned by the Maui High School Foundation
May 2018
Maui High School, our island’s first co-educational public high school, was established in 1913, near a thriving plantation village at the time called Hamakuapoko (H’Poko). The H’Poko campus served as Home of the Sabers for nearly six decades, until the winter break of 1971-72 when the school relocated to Kahului.
The beautiful architecture of the administration building, designed in 1921 by Maui boy C.W. Dickey, became an enduring and honored emblem of the campus. Over the years, it would serve to inspire many. “The Spirit Lives On” commemorates these iconic arches and the vibrant campus life at H’Poko that opened a world of possibilities for our school’s early alumni.
For creation of this artwork, the Maui High School Foundation commissioned internationally acclaimed artist Philip B. Sabado. Born and raised on Molokai and having raised his own family here on Maui, Sabado’s 30+ years of masterful work in fine arts reflect a deep appreciation for Hawai’i culture and history. He is widely applauded for his beautiful island themed paintings and has completed commissions for a number of corporations statewide. With his six children being alumni of Maui High School, Sabado was a fitting match for this calling to immortalize the much loved historic site of our island school’s original campus.
This project was made possible by generous funding support from class of 1959 graduate Mr. Donald Takaki and the Takaki Foundation. In 2011 Mr. Takaki was the first Saber to receive Maui High’s Spirit of Maui Award, an award given to alumni who have made a difference in our community. Over the years, Mr. Takaki has been a strong supporter of the continued progress of Maui High School and the Maui High School Foundation. His message to all Sabers is the importance of giving back to your school and the community that raised you.
